The 2008 Annual Meeting of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) will be an intensive program focused on the latest techniques in minimally invasive spine surgery. The main scientific session on Friday, November 14, 2008 is CME accredited by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. A highly interactive program is planned consisting of lectures by leaders in the field, case discussions, debates, and presentation of research. This will be combined with a hands-on lab program on Thursday, November 13 and Saturday, November 15. The Thursday and Saturday laboratory sessions will be dedicated to cadaver and dry lab instruction. The stations will showcase various types of procedures performed in minimally invasive spine surgery. The objective of this course is to familiarize spine surgeons with the multiple techniques and various platforms which may be used in their current or future practice.

These cadaver courses will provide attendees with instructions on surgical techniques that will allow them to use a minimally invasive approach to colon and rectum resection. These courses will specifically outline the steps for performing a laparoscopic colectomy with a hand assist technique:
- colonic mobilization
- devascularization
- finding the ureter
- splenic flexure mobilization
- specimen delivery and anastomosis
