Detailed Description:
Scripps Cancer Center’s Oncology Nurses Symposium is designed for nurses and other health care professionals dedicated to the field of oncology. During this three and a half day conference, attendees will benefit from an intimate learning environment in which renowned faculty will present the latest in oncology care and provide practical strategies and tools to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.

The course will explore the latest information on various types of cancers including: prostate cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer, and thoracic cancers. Treatment advances, pain management, long-term side effects, and end of life care will also be discussed. In addition to offering strong clinical content from leading experts, the Oncology Nurses Symposium will delve into human factor issues facing oncology health care professionals today and offer a reminder of why oncology nurses are so critical to patient care.

Learning Objectives:
After participating in this conference, attendees should be able to:
• Describe the cellular mechanism of action and determine who will benefit from novel targeted oncologic medications and tailored treatment with the use of biomarkers.
• Implement strategies for preventing, assessing, and managing therapy-induced side effects such as fatigue, cardiac dysfunction and cognitive dysfunction.
• Identify resources for patient assistance and the use of navigation in the changing financial climate.
• Illustrate current trends and emerging issues under investigation for lymphoma and induction treatment for leukemia.
• Integrate care across the interdisciplinary continuum for the management of breast, prostate, and thoracic cancers.
• Assess the mental health of oncology patients and provide appropriate support and resources.
• Evaluate the data leading to the new screening guidelines for breast and prostate cancer and discuss the implications.
• Demonstrate interventions for end of life communication.
• Interpret various outcomes of the use of vitamins to help prevent cancer and improve treatment.
• Employ evidence-based techniques to prevent central line infections and provide optimal pain control for the oncology population.
• Translate up-to-date evidence and implement into practice.
