Target Audience:


The target audience is physicians, advance practice nurses, physician assistants, registered nurses, midwives, and students in these professions.


Learning Objectives:
  • Perform a medical forensic examination on a sexual assault patient, if the patient consents,that is clinically appropriate and sensitive to the patient’s needs;
  • Perform a medical forensic examination on a sexual assault patient, if the patient consents, that will potentially aid in a criminal case investigation concerning the sexual assault;
  • Discuss standard protocols and practices and describe standard tools and kits used for evidence collection in alleged sexual assault situations;
  • Counsel a sexual assault patient regarding pregnancy concerns;
  • Counsel a sexual assault patient regarding treatment options for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV;
  • Describe the coordination necessary among health professionals to improve the care of the sexual assault patient;
  • Describe the interface between healthcare professionals, patient advocates, law enforcement officers, criminalists, and officers of the court;
  • Deliver proper testimony in a court of law regarding the conduct of a proper medical examination and medical forensic examination of a sexual assault patient.
