Detailed Description:
Pediatric mental health issues occur around the world – no country or group is immune. By examining the rates of psychiatric diagnoses and psychiatric issues worldwide, progress can be made to help prevent these issues in the future. International studies using instruments from the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) are discussed, along with interpretations of the acquired data. Instruments are described in detail, including information regarding the validity and reliability of the instruments. Statistical issues and corresponding solutions in research and assessment techniques are also discussed.
Learning Objectives:
- Types of assessment scales used to assess pathology in a pediatric population
- Rates of psychiatric comorbidity in international pediatric samples
- Statistical concepts such as bias, validity, correlation, and ANOVA
- Data from international studies using instruments that comprise the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment.
- The empirically-based approach to diagnosis by using data on children’s issues in multiple contexts
- Challenges found when conducting research on a multicultural pediatric population
- Types, purposes, and advantages of epidemiological designs of diagnostic interviews
- Benefits and future uses for multicultural pediatric research of psychiatric issues
