Detailed Description:
Conducting family therapy with clients of multicultural backgrounds requires knowledge of the specific experiences and therapeutic issues of clients. Therapists present their own life experiences, and occasionally their own genograms, as a window into the lives of those not from the dominant culture in the United States. Biases, classism, and sexism are discussed, along with how each of these issues impacts the life experience of clients. Various family structures are discussed, and how therapeutic treatments may or may not be beneficial to specific family structures. Future issues in multicultural family therapy are discussed, including educating trainees to provide the best standard of care in their therapeutic practice.
