Detailed Description:
This an intermedate level eithics courses for licensed Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Mental Health Counselors. This course focuses on the law verses ethics, different types of ethics, reporting ethical violations, ethical issues specific to mental health professionals as well as the future directions of ethics in the mental health profession, including online counseling and coaching.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course valued at three continuing education credits, the learner will be able to:
  1. Delineate between ethics and laws, and be cognizant of the different facets of ethics, and how they influence decision making.
  2. Identify the steps in the ethical decision making process and apply these steps to professional practice.
  3. Determine the professional organization of which one must follow ethical guidelines, and learn the applications of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to professional practice.
  4. Become aware of ethical issues and dilemmas that specifically affect the mental health professional, and be knowledgeable of the profession’s stance on these issues.
  5. Discover the future directions of ethics in the mental health profession, including online counseling and coaching.
