Detailed Description:
The authors discuss a 3-stage model of therapeutic treatment for couples that are impacted by an affair. During the first stage of recovery, the impact stage, the couple attempts to understand what has happened. The second stage of recovery is called the meaning stage. During this stage, the couple explores in more depth why the affair occurred. During the third stage of recovery, the moving-on stage, the couple learns to move past the event and not let it control their lives. The authors detail each of the three stages and give therapists techniques and methods for conducting an initial assessment, increasing the collaborative relationship, and helping the couples feel safe to communicate openly during the sessions.
