Detailed Description:
Patients with bipolar disorder (BPD) have an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its numerous component risk factors, including dyslipidemia. Recognition of this fact led to the release of joint recommendations from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the America Diabetes Association (ADA) regarding metabolic assessment and management in patients with severe mental illness. It also served as an impetus to develop evidencebased measures such as the Standards for Bipolar Excellence (STABLE) project. The measure regarding dyslipidemia encourages a high benchmark for clinician performance regarding "the percentage of patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder and treated with an atypical antipsychotic agent who receive at least one assessment for hyperlipidemia within the initial 16 weeks of treatment." A previous, neuroscienceCME Live and On Demand activity in December 2010 discussed the rationale for lipid measurement in this patient population, established underperformance of such measurement as an important practice gap, and outlined strategies for increasing lipid measurement. This neuroscienceCME Webcast (reinforcing activity) will further assist clinicians in identifying how to customize and implement a process for increasing lipid measurement that works within their own clinical setting.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Express attitudinal competence regarding the call to action to improve rates of appropriate lipid measurement in patients with BPD.
- Skillfully and confidently use patient-centered counseling messages to explain the rationale for lipid measurement to patients with BPD who take atypical antipsychotic agents.
- Increase the rate at which they perform baseline lipid assessment, in accordance with specified APA/ADA joint recommendations and the STABLE measure for dyslipidemia assessment.
Physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, certified case managers, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in bipolar disorder.
