The purpose of this conference is to update practitioners on new antimicrobials and the current recommendations for managing commonly encountered or emerging diseases, travel medicine and potential biowarfare exposure.

Following attendance at this educational activity, participants should be able to:
  • Review rules of travel
  • Recognize common travel syndromes
  • Identify value of Malarial prophylaxis
  • Relate that lifestyle, social interactions, travel and food processing all contribute to the emergence of new pathogens
  • Deduce that the emergence of new pathogens can to some extent be prevented by attention to ecology and antibiotic prescription
  • Update the practicing healthcare provider with the history of influenza
  • Update the practicing healthcare provider with the presentation of influenza
  • Describe the pathophysiology of influenza
  • Identify common pathogens encountered in influenza
  • Summarize pandemic prevention strategies as well as public health and personal guidelines for the prevention of disease transmission
  • Describe the presentation of pneumonia and SARS

  • Relate how to manage the patient with pneumonia both as inpatient and outpatient basis

  • Distinguish smallpox from other rashes
  • Recognize inhalation anthrax
