This lecture will focus on personalized medicine as a way of applying pharmacology to clinical medicine to obtain the right drug for the right patient at the right time for the right price, regardless of formulary status. An example, utilizing Statin selection, will be used to show how personalized medicine can be implemented in the clinical setting.
Neuropathic pain is pain that results from a lesion or dysfunction in the peripheral or central nervous system. It is one of the common clinical pain syndromes encountered by physicians and is challenging to manage. The incidence of neuropathic pain is likely to increase with the aging of the population. Neuropathic pain affects the individual's quality of life and is often associated with significant psychosocial morbidity and impaired interpersonal relationships. The social burdens of chronic neuropathic pain include increased healthcare costs, disability, and lost workdays. This program is intended for primary care physicians and those physicians who care for patients experiencing pain.
Pain is a silent epidemic in the United States. An estimated 50 million Americans live with chronic pain. An additional 25 million people suffer from acute pain resulting from surgery or accident. According to an American Pain Society study, approximately two thirds of these individuals in pain have been living with this pain for more than five years. The same study found that one out of four pain patients had changed doctors at least three times, reporting that the primary reason for change was that they still experienced pain. Patients also felt that their pain was not taken seriously; that doctors were unwilling to treat pain aggressively; and that doctors lacked knowledge about how to treat pain.

These factors and others indicate an increased need for education on effective assessment and treatment of pain. This program addresses an evidence-based approach to assessing and managing pain in the primary care setting. It has been developed in a case presentation format with each case addressing the educational objectives.
Presented by Continuing Education Company for the past 16 years, our Primary Care Conference Series is designed to update primary care clinicians in rapidly changing therapeutic areas. The emphasis is on practical and useful information for clinical practice.
