Sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movement, and insomnia are common in the United States with an estimated 60 million Americans experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, decreased memory and concentration, and pervasive malaise each year. Sleep disorders have a significant negative impact on work, physical, and social performance and overall quality of life and contribute to more than 50,000 unnecessary deaths each year. The total direct, indirect, and related costs of sleep disorders are conservatively estimated at as much as $107.5 billion annually. This activity utilizes Problem-Based Learning (PBL). PBL allows for in-depth discussion of patient case studies between faculty and participants. Programs using PBL have consistently demonstrated higher participant satisfaction and educational impact. This activity will last approximately 60 minutes.
